Remembering Papa Bob

Robert Emmett Carmody, Emmett with two Ts and don't forget t!

Just a few days before Christmas, my family had to say goodbye to my beloved grandpa, Robert Emmett Carmody. He was a man of good faith and a friend to many. Though my grandpa had his struggles in life, he was an amazing witness of God's love for us here on this earth. He was a great example of how to devote one's life to prayer, to others, and to the Sacraments.
My uncle Bill gave my grandfather's Eulogy, and though I would love to post the whole thing here for you, I am only going to share some selected pieces that touched me, brag if I may...
Though my grandfather had many successes, devoted many hours of service, and had countless hobbies, these excerpts below express my admiration of my grandfather as man of Christ:

"There wasn't a Catholic Priest on board the Snowden [dad's Navy vessel]. Dad would say the Mass to himself on a daily basis to help combat the stress. He carried a small replica of the child Jesus in his pocket, and would rub it when he became nervous...he prayed the Rosary daily...Even at such a young age, he had a strong faith in God to help him live his life."

"Like all of us, he had some set backs along the way. But I think that there were two attributes that he had that made him advance every time that he fell down. First he would start the day by saying, "This is the first day of the rest of your life," and he really meant it. Every day to dad was a great day to start over. He'd also often say, "This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad.""

"The other attribute regarding his longevity was his ability to turn things over to God...He knew many things were out of our control. He talked the talk and walked the walk. Now that dad is gone, we are going to miss him as a person to turn for advice, even though you knew that his advice would include, "turn it over to God" or "pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance.""

"In 1953, Dad was introduced to our Mom. Dad used to say that my mom's parents were a little bit cautious of their 24 year old German Catholic daughter marrying a 33 year old Irish Catholic who might appear a little bit of a "wild man." However, dad quickly influenced my mom's parents. By this time in his life dad was attending daily Mass, which he dis for over 60 years. When our grandfather asked him why he went to daily Mass, when there is only a Sunday obligation, he replied, "I just think that it gives me an extra special blessing each day." And from that point forward, my mom's parents attended daily Mass."

"For all of you that had the opportunity to touch our father in some way, the Carmody family says thank you. For those of you who worked with dad, worshipped, worked out, played golf, had lunch, volunteered, helped out, and cared for our Dad, we are truly indebted to you for your gift of friendship. Bob Carmody loved you. What an honor to be able to call Bob our husband, our dad, our grandpa, our colleague, or our friend!"

"Dad, you have fought the good fight, you have finished the race and you have kept the faith! You are now in paradise with our heavenly father and we know now that Heaven will never be the same. Be happy today, Dad, for today is truly the first day of the rest of your life! And for all of us here, let's remember, that this is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad.

The final days before my grandpa's passing were bitter sweet. I had total peace that he was about to embark upon eternal glory, but it was hard to see a friend go, especially when he had impacted so many lives. The days leading to my grandpa's death were filled with prayer and intercession. My grandfather was surrounded by his entire family. There were many beautiful moments upon my grandfather's death. One was on the evening that I returned home and entered his room, all of his children and his wife were present. Together we prayed the Rosary surrounding him. The other beautiful thing about my grandfather's death was that he was holding the San Damiano cross in one hand and Mary in his other. To me it was a true sign that grandpa was about to reach a much higher and grander place with Jesus and Mary right beside him. Throughout this whole time, my grandma's love for my grandpa blew me away. She told my grandpa that she would not let go of his hand until she could place it into the hands of Christ.
And to Christ he has gone.

Though we will miss our grandpa dearly, we did not want to mourn, but rather celebrate his life. Just to show you how one man can influence many, at my grandfather's funeral there were at least 800 people in attendance, we decided an Irish celebration was in order. Following the Mass, we had drinks and food to celebrate the life of one man, an only child at that, who had impacted at least 800 people, and we know several more!
Grandpa I love and miss you, but I know I have a cheerleader Above to help me follow God's will for my life!
Please pray for the repose of my grandfather's soul

Prepping for Christmas!

Anne Marie and I decided to purchase a real tree this year! It was quite an adventure!

We purchased a tree, it grew in size as it entered our home, and unfortunately it was a few knobs too thick to fit into the tree stand....but no worries.....

Little did I know that my roommate had a hand saw in her closet, and even if I did, who knew that we would ever need it!

Then during the final week of school before the "holiday" break, our staff had a Tacky Christmas Sweater Contest. I competed last year, but was nowhere close in the running. So this year, I went to my friend, Jenni B, the most dependable resource one could have for such an event.....especially when one owns over 50 broaches!

I overheard in the office one day that the true winner will actually be wearing a tacky sweater, not just tacky Christmas attire, so I knew I had a chance! Not only did I have on the tacky sweater, but I had on a tacky sweatshirt below with multiple broaches, necklaces, and a tree turtle neck...I could have even worn additional attire, but I will save that for next year! Here's a glance of the winning combination. Don't mind the angle of the camera which has enhanced the cheesiness of the photo....

To give full honor to Jenni and her winning wardrobe, here is the announcement made highlighting her contributions to the win!

"Lauren Dirnberger was our big winner. Please see attachments to check out Lauren's beautiful ensemble. Lauren seemed to combine every terribly tacky piece she could think of - lights, puff paint, pins ,appliqué art and a nice sweater to keep her warm on this cold, snowy day."

And here was the stiff competition....

Until next year, may the broach be with you!

Thanksgiving Day!

Thanksgiving weekend was filled with family and friends. Thanksgiving morning I ran in the Kirkwood-Webster Turkey day run in order to honor my high school cross country/track coach upon his retirement...There were easily 50+ people running and cheering in his honor! Thanks for your commitment to the KHS runner Coach Finnerty!

Following the run, I attended Mass with my grandparents for their 54th wedding anniversary. In attendance were many of their children and grandchildren. It was a great time to give thanks for my family! And a time to give thanks to God!
Here's what I took from the homily: "May the peace of Christ control your heart." ~Col. 3:15

That afternoon I went to my aunt Lynn's house to meet up with the entire Carmody crew for the Thanksgiving meal. Here are a few pics of the afternoon!

Happy Thanksgiving

Family and Friends, I want to take a moment to thank God for placing each and every one of you in my life. As the holidays approach, and the academic semester winds down, I am realizing that there are many things I have taken for granted, and that includes each and every one of you.

I know I have been busy, I know God has blessed me with many graces, and I know I have not made the best effort to be in touch with each of you, but know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers constantly.

This holiday season I will continue to thank God for the many graces he has shed upon me, especially in regards to my relationships with you.

May you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Count your blessings.

God Bless,
Love, Lauren

Silent Retreat

Sunrise

This weekend I attended a 24 hour retreat. It was a much needed break for the hustle and bustle of life and the noise I attend to each day at school! ;)

It was just a great time to get away from resAdd Imageponsibility and rest in the presence of the Lord. On the day of the retreat I greatly enjoyed God's creation on my way to and from work. God's beauty is all around us, we just need to stop and gaze at it!

Trip to St. Louis

I went home for the weekend beginning Halloween night. I had the opportunity to catch up with a lot of family at once. On Saturday I caught up with my dad and Francine and Francine's sister, Michelle, and neice, Haley. We went to Crown Candy in St. Louis! It is an old fashion ice cream parlor where the food is great, but the menu for dessert is five times as long as the lunch menu. If you ever have a chance, step back in time and go to this sweet shop!

My Roommate is Engaged!!!

Congrats Anne Marie and Mark!

I found out the Tuesday before that my roommate was going to be engaged over the weekend! I was in St. Louis, but her fiance and her parents planned a surprise party for my roommate Anne Marie on the day of her engagement!

I drove back into KC in time to surprise her with her family and friends, and Mark's family and friends as well! It was an exciting time and will continue to be as they now prepares for the wedding!

Halloween

Grandpa and Whoopi

I have to share a little bit of my family's tradition....well my grandma got hold of these nun "costumes." Honestly, I am still not sure of their origins, but they are fantastic, and if you know my mom, any of her friends, my aunts, or myself, you may have been in a sighting of these great habits!

For Halloween, my grandpa, the prankster that he is, wanted to enter a Halloween costume contest at his residence. He convinced one of the nurses to dress up with him as nuns! They were the champs! Check out these pics!

And here are some of his cheerleaders!

My Cousin Mary Came to Town!!!

My cousin Mary Murphy, an 8th grader at Visitation Academy in STL, came to Kansas City to play in a field hockey tournament. I was able to go watch her play a game on Saturday and cheer her on! It was great to see her and watch her encourage her teammates! It was a surreal experience having her in town. Unfortunately we didn't get to visit too long, but it was great to see her!
I love you Mary!
Mary is the 6th jersey from the left, #18!

Job well done Mary! Go Defense!
